A woman told police she was stabbed early Monday after she intervened in a fight between her husband and another man at a Hilo park.
Court documents filed by police state Anastasha Nau-Fikes, a 24-year-old Pahoa woman, told police she saw a man she knew as “David” strike her 27-year-old husband, Myreon Nau-Fikes, and “a tussle ensued.”
According to authorities, the altercation took place shortly after midnight at Wailoa State Recreation Area.
The woman reportedly told officers she felt a burning sensation in her lower right leg and realized she was cut and bleeding. She also said she saw her husband bleeding from the front of his neck, and he told her he had been stabbed and could not breathe, according to documents.
Anastasha Nau-Fikes said the suspect fled on foot toward the entrance of the park “holding a 4-5 inch throwing knife in his left hand,” documents state.
Responding officers spotted David Lester Bars, a 32-year-old homeless man, on Piilani Street near the park entrance and arrested him. Documents state Bars, who identified himself as David, was covered in blood.
Myreon Nau-Fikes was admitted to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition, underwent emergency surgery and later was upgraded to stable condition, police said. According to documents, emergency room physician Dr. Judith Fitzgerald said he suffered a puncture wound to the center of the neck which caused a serious injury that could have been fatal.
Bars was charged with attempted second-degree murder and second-degree assault. He made his initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon. Hilo District Judge Barbara Takase ordered him to return at 2 p.m. today for a preliminary hearing.
Bars remains in custody at Hawaii Community Correctional Center in lieu of $260,000 bail.
